FAQ
These are the questions we hear most often from contractors and facility managers choosing products. If yours isn't covered here, our team can help.
How can I prevent wall damage in high-traffic areas?
Wall damage is one of the most common maintenance issues in commercial and institutional buildings. Impact from carts, wheelchairs, cleaning equipment and foot traffic can quickly chip drywall and corners. To reduce repairs and extend wall life, most facilities install:
- Corner guards to protect exposed drywall edges, from brands such as InPro and CS Acrovyn
- Wall guards, crash rails and chair rail to shield flat wall surfaces in corridors, or floor-mounted bumper guards where carts run along the wall
- Wall base to protect the bottom of walls from impact and moisture
These systems are commonly installed in schools, hospitals, government buildings, hotels and multifamily properties where durability and appearance both matter.
What products help improve stair safety and code compliance?
Stair edges take constant impact and wear, and worn treads can become slippery, chipped or out of compliance with safety codes. Rubber stair treads restore traction across the step, and vinyl stair nosing or metal stair nosing protects and highlights the edge. Both matter in commercial buildings, public facilities and multifamily housing where slip resistance and ADA requirements apply.
For other code-driven areas, non-slip tape adds traction to ramps and landings, photoluminescent exit signs and markings keep egress paths visible when the lights go out, and truncated domes serve as detectable warnings at curb ramps and transit platforms.
How do I create safe transitions between different flooring types?
When tile meets carpet, VCT meets concrete, or resilient flooring meets another surface, exposed edges can crack or become trip hazards. Transition strips, edging and metal door thresholds give a clean finish and a smooth, safe step between materials. Where the floor crosses a building movement joint, use floor expansion joint covers instead of a standard transition.
What helps reduce long-term floor maintenance costs?
Much of the dirt and moisture that wears down floors is tracked in from outside. Entrance mats such as Waterhog mats trap it at the door, before it reaches VCT, LVT or carpet. Inside, chair and desk mats protect floors under rolling chairs, and edging at doorways and flooring changes keeps exposed edges from chipping.
What protects floors and finishes during construction or renovation?
Renovation work in an occupied building puts new and existing finishes at risk. Temporary floor protection covers floors along work paths, door frame protection guards openings where materials move through, and dust containment systems keep debris out of occupied areas, which hospitals and schools often require during construction.
How do I choose the right protection system for my building?
The right solution depends on:
- Traffic level
- Type of facility
- Flooring material
- Impact exposure
- Code requirements
Most commercial projects combine categories, for example corner guards, wall base and stair nosing in the same corridor and stairwell.
As Ron Starr, President and Co-Founder of Koffler Sales, puts it: “Our customers aren't buying one product. They're protecting a whole building, from the entrance mat to the top stair. That's why we keep wall, stair and floor protection under one roof, with people who know how those products work together.”
